Piping Plover
2022
Ceramic, audio (00:10:15).
Sound made in collaboration with Theodore Shier.

1 of 2 site-specific works for washed ashore at Fort Tilden, curated by Adrienne Greenblatt.

The ceramic “rock speaker” plays a sound work featuring collected and archival audio. The audio was mixed to play from inside the rock, making the sound and the ceramic inseparable.

The piping plover is a critically endangered bird whose habitat is under active federal protection at Fort Tilden. To protect its eggs, a parent piping plover will use “broken wing display,” leading the threat away from their offspring through diversion and de-escalation.
