Piping Plover

Ceramic, sound.

2 of 2 site-specific works on display for washed ashore at Fort Tilden, curated by Adrienne Greenblatt.

The ceramic “rock” speaker plays a sound piece (10:15) using collected and archived audio. The audio was mixed from inside the rock, making the sound and the ceramic inseparable. Sound collaboration with Theo Shier.

The piping plover is a critically endangered bird whose habitat is under active federal protection at Fort Tilden.

To protect its eggs (they are threatened by predators and beach go-ers who step on their nests), a parent piping plover will use “broken wing display” to lead a threat away from their offspring as a diversion.
